Five months have passed by since my first article. Throughout these months as a SEF mentee, I have gained a lot of exposure with my mentor, Miss Priyadharshany.

In my third blog article I will be talking about whether or not we are giving the right platform for gifted children”

Why did I choose this topic?

I have come across this thought since I was schooling and especially when I started to watch the Sri Lankan version of “Who wants to be a millionaire” television show. Back in my school days there were students who scored A+ in all subjects, joined one of the most prestigious universities in Sri Lanka or had the best positions in terms of sports. Within the system of education, it is a widely known fact that it’s not easy for all students to excel in both sports and education at the same time. Yet there are children who are gifted with these skills. Even in the TV show I have seen young children performing better than industry experts or even adults.

But are we giving the right platform to the gifted children? Due to cultural issues, the level of education, political factors and many other myths, modern students have very limited ways of performing and being identified as a gifted child. When kids ask too many questions parents and teachers stop them.because it’s easy to control a child, but without unknowingly they may have yet murdered another young Einstein .

My next blog article will elaborate on how to identify gifted children and how we should give them the right platform.

How being a project manager has changed my life

After working as a business analyst for 6 months I moved to a trainee Infrastructure project manager position in one of the reputed companies and the number one garment industry in Sri Lanka. With my new job role, I carry out a senior project manager level workload. It’s always a rollercoaster working day and night, weekends and weekdays. Although honestly I haven’t taken this challenge negatively and so far I never had a lazy mood to work even at 3am in the morning. Thanks to simple mental health techniques.

However, this has led to one issue which is a major barrier for my passion. That is, Finding time to write my blog article. For that I found a solution which has been effective and productive throughout . Here are some of the tips I use,

· Outline your blog article in advance. Don’t show up at the blank screen! Sketch out the major points you plan to cover in an article in advance. This helps to jump start your thinking because your brain can work on the idea while you’re doing other things.

· Break blogging tasks into smaller chunks. Just as readers snack on content, find ways to divide your blogging activities into pieces that can be done in smaller time segments.

· Wait for the passion to write. Find those cues and activities that create a desire to write. At the core, this is what blogging is about, the strong feelings for a specific topic.

· Collect blog post ideas. Jot ideas when you have them. Many bloggers find that they get their best ideas in the shower or just before they fall asleep. Keep a pad nearby at all times so that you can capture those fleeting ideas. Don’t think that you’ll remember those points in the morning but, like the rest of us, you don’t.

Mentoring sessions

After publishing my articles on “Cell phone addiction” and suicide prevention, miss Priyadharshany, taught me how to write a blog article step by step and gave me some valuable insights specially when writing a sensitive topic like suicide. With my career, finding time to write an article is tough. Moreover, we both barely get a chance to set up a meeting and discuss our thoughts.

Though there is a delay on my third article, I’ll be continuing my mental health adventure with my mentor, Priya. Finally, I want to say that I identified my strengths while competing with my weaknesses and I am scrolling them into other good aspects to meet my goals. In addition, I expect to get the maximum out of this program while maintaining strong communication with my mentor. Mentoring can build-up great personalities while grooming our own competencies to get the maximum within our capacity.
